We have a rather spooky update for our readers today in the form of a brand new feature, written by our dedicated staff member RoyboyX! Roy has written a piece around the inclusion of horror in Metroid, and how it impacted him personally growing up. What better way to mark Halloween than with a feature discussing one of Metroid’s most intense elements?
Feature: Legacy of the Villains
We have published a brand new feature on Shinesparkers. New team member Quadraxis takes a look at the villains in the Metroid franchise and the impact they’ve had both on the series, and himself. We hope you’ll check it out in our Features section, or by clicking on the link below. Thank you to Quadraxis for sharing his first feature. We hope to hear more from him in the future!
Community Spotlight: Xephyr Cosplay
Today we are proud to be sharing another chapter in our Shinesparkers Community Spotlight features. This time, we highlight the great work of David (Xephyr Cosplay), an award-winning cosplayer with a passion for technology and art, which he loves to bring together with his creations. His Varia Suit cosplay recently won best in show at Houston’s Comicpalooza 2018, many pictures of which can be found in the feature, along with some words from the man behind the cosplay.
A huge thank you to David for taking the time to speak with us and share his wonderful creations!
Awesome Games Done Quick 2019 approved list features two Metroid games
Awesome Games Done Quick 2019 submissions have now gone live, with the current approved runs publicly available to view. While dates and times for each run haven’t been allocated, the list is already very strong with many respectable runners having already submitted their runs for the weeklong event from January 6th-13th 2019.
Two Metroid games have already been featured in the list. The runs are Metroid Fusion Any% Memory Corruption from CScottyW with a 55 minute estimate, and Super Metroid Reverse Boss Order by ShinyZeni with a 1 hour 20 minute estimate.
Both runs should be highly entertaining, as they are unconventional from the usual fare. Metroid Fusion in particular will be the first time memory corruption will be used for the game at a GDQ, having only recently been made possible outside of tool-assisted speed runs.
This likely won’t be the only showings for Metroid from the event, as submissions have only just gone live. It’s quite likely to expect a Prime game to be shown, as well as the possibility of shenanigans from TASBot. We will update you on any further runs that get approved, as well the final schedule announcement when everything has been arranged.

Meta Ridley costume render for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate finally revealed
Source Gaming just came forward with render images for a variety of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate alternate costumes which had been sitting on Nintendo press servers for some time now. After obtaining permission, they revealed multiple designs that we’ve known about before, and one entirely new costume (Yoshi’s Crafted World styled Yoshi), but hadn’t had the full renders released until now.
The Meta Ridley costume was featured in his reveal trailer from E3 but was absent from use in the demos we’ve seen so far, so it’s a delight to be able to see it in full at last.

Metroid confirmed to be playable through Nintendo Switch Online
There’s been one Metroid-related announcement in today’s Nintendo Direct – the original Metroid game will be one of the titles available to play through Nintendo Switch Online, which launches Sept. 18 (next Tuesday). There’s no word so far on whether it will be one of the games with new online co-op functionality, but we’ll keep you posted! We’ll also let you know about any more Metroid announcements, if there are any, in the Direct.

Sega’s Toshihiro Nagoshi wanted to make a Metroid game
The chief creative officer of Sega, Toshihiro Nagoshi, was recently interviewed by Edge magazine about his career at Sega and creating games like Super Monkey Ball and F-Zero GX. At one point, Nagoshi mentions that before developing F-Zero GX, Sega had made a few proposals for games using Nintendo IP. One of these was Metroid! Apparently, the proposal was rejected or went nowhere. Nagoshi added that he was more confident in making a driving game, hence F-Zero GX:
I really liked the Super Famicom game [F-Zero], and while we made a few proposals – Metroid for instance, and others – I was most confident in making a driving game because of my experience in the genre, though I’d never make a sci-fi one.
There you have it folks. We could’ve had a Metroid game developed by Sega. Maybe in the future they’ll get their chance.

Dark Samus and Brinstar Depths stage confirmed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate!
During today’s Nintendo Direct, Dark Samus was confirmed for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a playable fighter! She will be an Echo Fighter, or clone of Samus, with a few key differences. We suspected she could be after she was missing from the Assist Trophy showcase at E3. This marks an unprecedented total of four Metroid characters in Super Smash Bros.!
In related news, Brinstar Depths has been confirmed to return as a stage for the first time since Super Smash Bros. Melee, and more Metroid music will be included. All returning Metroid songs can now be played on any related stage (Brinstar, Brinstar Depths, Norfair, Frigate Orpheon) as well. More information as it develops.
On top of this, Nintendo of Europe’s Twitter says that Dark Samus will be getting an amiibo! When it will come isn’t known as of yet, but we’re very excited! Check out her gorgeous render and character showcase video below.
