Fans come together to support Operation Samus Returns

A campaign that originated between Spanish Nintendo fans on YouTube to promote the upcoming Metroid: Samus Returns has taken to social media to promote their cause. Operation Samus Returns is a movement that intends to raise awareness of the franchise and encourage fans to consider playing games in the Metroid series, including the upcoming Metroid: Samus Returns.

The hashtag #OperationSamusReturns has encouraged fans to share their love of Metroid through fan art, gameplay videos and messages of support. The campaign may have been born in the Spanish community, but it has already reached English-speaking websites and communities. It has even been covered in Japanese websites and blogs!  On the 31st August 2017, the people behind the movement would like to see people create content to share on platforms such as YouTube, Twitter and Facebook with their hashtag to see just how many people have got behind the cause.

Below is a video from Spanish YouTube user Alex White who reached out to English speaking fans for their support. We hear you Alex!

This is a cause Shinesparkers can endorse, as it’s a positive message we ourselves attempt to promote. We wish #OperationSamusReturns the very best of luck and we hope that Nintendo will spot the enthusiasm of the Metroid fan community.

New Aeion Ability Seemingly Discovered For Samus Returns

Along with the influx of new information for Metroid: Samus Returns we’ve gleaned today, we have also potentially discovered what the fourth and last Aeion Ability is for Samus.

The picture below was featured on Reddit and upon close examination, one can make out the details of the new Aeion Ability.

The ability appears to be called “Phase Drift” and it slows down time for everyone but Samus. This ability seems like it would be quite powerful, especially if it makes the timing for the new melee counter easier to pull off.

The poster on Reddit claims his friend works at a printing job and that’s how they were able to get their hands on a special edition box. Until further information surfaces, it should be taken as a rumor.

20 minutes of Metroid: Samus Returns gameplay and new information from Nintendo Minute

Nintendo Minute has released a 20 minute long video with some new gameplay and information about Metroid: Samus Returns. They also showed off the amiibo for the game. Apparently, the Reserve Tanks that the amiibo unlock are permanent; they’re not one-time uses. You can’t get rid of them once you’ve scanned them in unless you start a new save file. When you run out of energy, Missiles and Aeion, they will automatically be replenished. It also shows the Metroid marker, but not the galleries or Fusion Suit since those are unlocked after beating the game.

Additionally, it looks like the Ice and Power Beams don’t stack, and you can switch between them on the touch screen a’la Metroid Prime and Echoes. The Ice Beam has been slightly reworked: you now need to charge your shot to freeze enemies, a regular shot only briefly immobilizes them.

You can watch the video below.

Nintendo clarifies Samus Returns hard mode

In a preview event for Metroid: Samus Returns, Nintendo clarified to USGamer the specifics behind the amiibo locked Fusion mode within the game. As it turns out, a regular hard mode will be unlockable without the need of any amiibo, but a separate “Fusion” mode, which also grants the player access to the Fusion Suit from Metroid Fusion, is only accessible via the Metroid amiibo.

Yes, Fusion Mode—which will give players access to Samus’ Fusion Suit as well as a more challenging difficulty in the game—is indeed locked behind the Metroid amiibo. This content will not be offered as a separate DLC in Nintendo’s digital eShop. However, there will be a standard hard mode that will be unlockable once players complete the game on regular difficulty.
