Metroid news has been trickling from Nintendo lately, and the latest Gamescom conference only added more info for us to digest about Metroid: Samus Returns. With so much being announced, there’s a good chance you may have missed some of it, so here’s a quick rundown on some of the notable intelligence we’ve gathered regarding the Metroid series this week.

NEW SAMUS RETURNS ABILITIES AND ENEMIES FROM GAMESCOM

Some familiar abilities and weapons were shown off during gameplay segments at Gamescom, including the Wave Beam, Space Jump, and Grapple Beam. In addition, a new Aeion ability, Phase Drift, was revealed. When used, time slows down for everything but Samus. New enemies and gameplay segments were also shown. I’d recommend giving it a read, if you haven’t already!

METROID: SAMUS RETURNS TO FEATURE “CHOZO MEMORIES”

A new addition that was recently revealed for Samus Returns has been dubbed “Chozo Memories” and serve as an incentive for players to more thoroughly complete the game. Those interested in Metroid lore should definitely take a look.

FUSION MODE IN METROID: SAMUS RETURNS TO BE MUCH MORE DIFFICULT THAN HARD MODE

Although we’re still unclear as to how difficult the new Fusion Mode is in Samus Returns, Yoshio Sakamoto ensures that it is “significantly” more grueling than Hard Mode. He also provides some vague hints as to what you should expect, should you opt to try the new mode.

NEW ARTWORK FROM METROID: SAMUS RETURNS

Yoshio Sakamoto and Creative Director from MercurySteam, Jose Luis Márquez, divulged some new artwork for Samus Returns at Gamescom. Artwork for the Omega Metroid was displayed, as well as art for a brand new antagonist in the game.

YOSHIO SAKAMOTO LOOKS TO THE FUTURE OF METROID AFTER SAMUS RETURNS

For the longest time, Metroid fans have been afraid of the series dying off or remaining dormant. However, an interview with Yoshio Sakamoto should put those thoughts to rest, as he assures readers that the series is not over and discusses what he would like to do next.

SAMUS GUNSHIP CAR REVEALED FOR ROCKET LEAGUE SWITCH

Rocket League and Metroid fans alike were treated to an unexpected reveal during Gamescom this week. In addition to Mario and Luigi-themed cars in Rocket League, Samus’ Gunship will also accompany them. There’s even a trailer showcasing the new cars!

And that should just about do it for new Metroid information! With the release of Samus Returns approaching, keep an eye on the website for new updates!

Metroid: Samus Returns wins “Best Mobile Game” award at Gamescom 2017

This year’s Gamescom was packed to the brim with new information and interviews concerning Metroid: Samus Returns, but the recognition it received did not stop there. To round off the conference, Gamescom announced the award winners for their 2017 convention, with Nintendo emerging victorious in quite a few of the categories.

  • Danger Mouse: The Danger Games, 9th Impact
  • Metroid: Samus Returns, Nintendo

In fact, Samus Returns was the winner for the “Best Mobile Game” category, beating out Danger Mouse: The Danger Games. With all of the attention and acclaim the remake has been receiving, it’s no wonder that the newest Metroid title walked away with the award.

Metroid: Samus Returns to feature “Chozo Memories”

Nintendo’s live show of Metroid: Samus Returns with Series Producer Yoshio Sakamoto and Creative Director Jose Luis Márquez from MercurySteam gave us some interesting information on some new story content for the upcoming game called Chozo Memories. These memories seem to serve as an incentive for players to complete the game thoroughly.

Yoshio Sakamoto: In Metroid: Samus Returns, by meeting certain conditions you can unlock a number of visuals called the Chozo Memories. These tell the story of what happened on the planet SR388, as well as what the Chozo did. They may reveal a surprising secret that nobody could have imagined.

Jose Luis Márquez went on to add that players will be rewarded for finding all secrets and exploring the whole planet.

Any additional Metroid lore is always welcome, and we can’t wait to find out more about the Chozo! Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too much longer as Metroid: Samus Returns will launch on the 15th of September.

New artwork from Metroid: Samus Returns

Brand new artwork from Metroid: Samus Returns was shown today at a live show from Gamescom, where series producer Yoshio Sakamoto and creative director Jose Luis Márquez from MercurySteam shared new information on the upcoming title.

The artwork shows one of the final stages of the Metroid evolution the Omega Metroid, along with a brand new antagonist the Diggernaut (official spelling to be confirmed). Both of these were shown off for the first time during the thirty minute segment which was live streamed via the European Nintendo YouTube channel.

Fusion Mode in Metroid: Samus Returns to be much more difficult than Hard Mode

Upon learning of the existence of a Hard Mode difficulty in addition to Fusion Mode in Metroid: Samus Returns, many are probably wondering what the possible differences between the two modes are. Although details are scarce, an interview conducted by Eurogamer at Gamescom 2017 with co-creator of the Metroid series, Yoshio Sakamoto, helps shed a little light on the difficulty of Fusion Mode.

An excerpt from the interview is featured below.

Which brings me onto my next question, how much harder than Hard Mode is Fusion Mode?

Yoshio Sakamoto: I can’t really get into the details, but I can say Fusion Mode is significantly more difficult than Hard Mode. Sorry I can’t go into more detail, but I want fans to experience it for themselves.

Well, a very hard mode would be to remove all the save stations…

Yoshio Sakamoto: There will be save stations… the nature of the difficulty isn’t that form, it’s more how much damage will be inflicted, and the like.

While the interview doesn’t delve too deeply into the details, we now know that Save Stations will remain intact and that Samus will take more damage from enemy attacks. I would wager that Samus also deals less damage herself, in addition to this. Other games in the series had Missile Expansions grant her fewer extra missiles as well, so that may be possible, but this is just speculation.

Sakamoto’s words sound quite ominous, so I think it’s safe to say that Fusion Mode will provide quite the challenge!

Yoshio Sakamoto looks to the future of Metroid after Samus Returns

In an interview with Eurogamer, long-time Metroid series director Yoshio Sakamoto spoke about Metroid: Samus Returns, and was asked about what sort of Metroid game he’d like to do next. While he didn’t say anything conclusive, he did give a few hints. Now that he’s created a remake, he’d like to take on a new game.

Do you have any idea where the series’ story might go in the future, what might happen?

Yoshio Sakamoto: It’s a tricky question to answer about the future. [Regardless], the Metroid series is not over [laughs]

What would you like to make next? Another remake or a fresh title?

Yoshio Sakamoto: We’ve just made a full-fledged remake so I’d rather take on something new. That’s my general approach, and this was a new challenge.

A sequel to Metroid Fusion that continues the story, perhaps? Only time will tell folks.

Metroid: Samus Returns Overview Trailer Released

Nintendo have released an overview trailer for the upcoming Metroid: Samus Returns. It gives an overview of the story, Samus’ mission on planet SR388 and details the special features and upgrades obtainable in the re-imagined game. The trailer also confirms the final Aeion ability we reported on recently called “Phase Drift” which allows Samus to slow down time to avoid enemy attacks and reach areas not otherwise possible.

New Samus Returns abilities and enemies from Gamescom

A new wave of information has come from Nintendo and MercurySteam from Gamescom today for Metroid: Samus Returns. Several new abilities were shown off, both old and new, as well as a look at two new encounters (one of which should be very familiar to long time fans.)

The Wave Beam was immediately shown off in the game for the first time in the gameplay presentation, acting just like prior incarnations of it. Samus was also seen repeatedly jumping, meaning she has the Space Jump for this section of the demo. Lastly, the Grapple Beam was shown, acting as a means of pulling switches. It is automatically integrated with the new laser sight feature, turning the laser blue on grapple-able objects and also automatically activating should you fire your arm cannon on a blue sight.

The new ability was a new Aeion ability, the Phase Drift. This slows down time for everything except Samus. Enemies slowed to a crawl and even breaking blocks took longer to disintegrate. It was demonstrated effectively on a section with fireballs being fired across the screen too fast to effectively jump past without taking damage, but was reduced to nothing with the Phase Drift.

Lastly, enemy encounters. It was shown that the Metroid can evolve to have their own unique abilities from each other, demonstrated with an Alpha Metroid with fire abilities. A brand new enemy encounter was with the Diggernought (as heard by ear, but not written) which traps Samus into a crusher sequence where she has to escape through obstacles before a crusher catches up to her. Lastly, the Omega Metroid was shown off, being drastically different from past encounters, such as slamming its tail on the ground to shake down rocks from the ceiling above. Samus was seen wearing the Gravity Suit during this section too.

Special logs of the Chozo can also be unlocked by unspecified means called the Chozo Memories. They aim to shed new light on the race and their influence on the universe of Metroid.

Samus Gunship car revealed for Rocket League Switch

During Gamescom today, Psyonix revealed special Nintendo themed cars for the Switch version of Rocket League, of which Samus’ Gunship is one of.

The vehicle will be free unlockables for everyone who plays the game at launch. Orange team players get the default colour scheme, while blue team gets a “classic” variation. The gunship also has a Wave Beam themed Rocket Boost too.
