We have a lot more content planned throughout May and the rest of the year, and we will continue to share any Metroid news that comes up. See you next mission!

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond U.S. site updated

The U.S. Nintendo site for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has now been updated to be similar to its Japanese counterpart. Underneath the standard official trailer and screenshots is the game’s key art, and the option to play the Viewros theme in full. It features biographies and looping clips of Samus, Planet Viewros, her objective to explore Viewros and find a way home, her new Psychic Abilities, the Lamorn (described as “Friend or Foe?”) and Sylux. You can access it at the link below.

    Community Spotlight: Hoshizora Lone

Our first Community Spotlight of 2025 focuses on Hoshizora Lone, a talented illustrator whose art depicts Metroid characters in a lighthearted sense, a nice change from the usual grim approach. She enjoys depicting Metroid’s characters in normal, everyday situations, and often pairs Samus with fellow Bounty Hunter Gandrayda. We hope you’ll check out her amazing work!

Nintendo shares updated Metroid Prime 4: Beyond plot summary

The Nintendo of America store listing for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond has updated its plot summary. If you’re trying to avoid spoilers, you may not want to keep reading.

For those who want to know:

Deadly sharpshooter Sylux has finally caught up with renowned bounty hunter Samus Aran! After an unexpected accident in the wake of their clash, Samus finds herself transported to Viewros—a mysterious planet once inhabited by an ancient race. Now she must explore this planet, all while battling the strange creatures that inhabit it, to find her way home.

Scan your surroundings for clues, make the most of your equipment and weapons, and use Samus’s newfound psychic abilities to manipulate her surroundings. Operate mechanisms in the environment, control your charge beam, and more—you’ll need every tool at your disposal to survive and escape Viewros!

The accident is likely Sylux shooting the mysterious artifact during his appearance at the beginning of the game, as seen in recent footage from the Nintendo Switch 2 Experience. Some have theorized that this was how Samus was transported to Viewros, and it looks like they were right!

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond is scheduled for release in 2025. As soon as we have any news, namely a release date, we will bring it to you straight away! Watch this space.

The Community Speaks on Metroid Prime 4: Beyond

After the Switch 2 Direct, when it was announced that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond would receive a next generation version, we held a poll asking if our followers would get that or stick to the original Switch. On Twitter, our readers overwhelmingly voted in favor of Switch 2 (74.7%), compared to 25.3% who wanted to play it on the first Switch. On YouTube, the same poll had a very similar result, 71% of respondents would get it on Switch 2, and 29% on Switch 1.

Many who replied to the poll said they would buy the game on Switch 1 and purchase the next gen upgrade, instead of buying a physical Switch 2 cartridge. A few even said they’d get both versions. A few of the comments indicated that they were choosing Switch 1 because the Switch 2’s price is cost prohibitive.

We also ran a poll asking if you’ll be using gyro or mouse controls with the game. These polls were much closer. On Twitter, 59.2% of followers said they would use gyro controls, compared to 40.8% who chose mouse controls. On YouTube, the result was 58%-42% in favor of gyro controls, which suggests most Metroid players are used to the Wii Remote-type controls from Metroid Prime Trilogy. Although these are the two control schemes Nintendo has promoted at in-person Switch 2 events and in online marketing, dual analog controls are still present in Prime 4 and a number of our readers said they would use those.

Others said they would wait and see until they had their hands on the game, then they could decide. All of these perspectives are fair, and the beauty of Prime 4 is that everyone will have their choice of how to play. In response to some who said they’d use the new GameCube controller to play Prime 4, I’m sorry to disappoint, that will only work with Nintendo Switch Online’s GameCube titles.

Next, we posed a question on Twitter and Bluesky in response to concerns that Nintendo hasn’t begun marketing Metroid Prime 4 aggressively enough despite the anticipation for it. We asked, if they held a dedicated Direct for Prime 4, what our followers would want to see in it. Unsurprisingly, many of you said you want the release date. Us too! Others said they hope for multiplayer content (which is unconfirmed as of yet), a deeper dive into the story, or an announcement of a Collector’s Edition. Some even said they don’t want to see any more, wanting to go into the experience spoiler-free. That’s fair! We’ve waited so long for this game that any massive spoiler would feel evil.

As we get closer to the release of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, more information will come, and we’ll be sure to bring it to you as soon as it does. Metroid Prime 4 is scheduled to come out in 2025 on Nintendo Switch 1 and 2.

Retro Studios prototype Project Harmony has leaked

Multiple prototypes for Nintendo Switch games have leaked online, including a demo for a cancelled game in development at Retro Studios. The prototypes were found in a Nintendo Switch dev kit and also include debug builds of Splatoon 2 and Arms, an unreleased LEGO Civilization game, and a Ridge Racer prototype.

Project Harmony is apparently what Retro Studios was working on in the intervening years between Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. There have been rumors for years that Retro was developing a singing rhythm game or RPG, and this debug build, which is dated 2017, may have confirmed it. It was never officially announced.

It features a bubbly, red-haired female protagonist with a flower in her hair, who sings. The prototype features a playable test area and a bonus menu with concept art, dioramas, music, lore cinemas (presumably cutscenes) and the credits.

The protagonist uses a staff for a weapon and she can perform a ground slam, summon one of four magical creatures with varying abilities (one of which appears on the introduction screen), double jump and wall jump to climb platforms. The creatures include a winged sort of fish that she can mount and fly on, and a burly creature with moss on its back, which appears along with her on the title screen.

You can watch footage of the Harmony prototype here and here. It’s a real shame this was cancelled, it could have had much potential.

Update (April 8, 2025): Further footage of Project Harmony has been leaked onto Bluesky, in this thread. It shows some more polished combat, and a song that the protagonist sings with her animal friends.

    Metroid Prime 4: Beyond transcript

We’ve transcribed all text that was present in gameplay footage shown today, either during the Nintendo Treehouse: Live showcase, or in footage provided by other outlets. This includes scan text, onscreen tutorials, and GF Trooper dialogue.

We can confirm that, at least for now, there is no dubbing for the Japanese version of the game. Famitsu’s clip reveals that the English voice acting is retained with Japanese subtitles.

    The transcript is as follows:

This text comes from IGN’s final preview footage:

[he sits up] What? What now? Samus? Samus Aran! Hey! Hey, Samus Aran! I’m stuck, help me out- Please get me down. Uh… I’ll… I’ll just stay right here. And try not to die.”

MacKenzie: “Oh, great job! Now, help me down?”

MacKenzie: “Oh, oh… We’re… Oh, we’re good! OK! I’m… I’m coming down. Thank you, Samus. I’m specialist Myles MacKenzie, Engineer Level 4. I have something for you. Hold on, I gotta… manually override this thing. These X7s tend to stick a little. Come on!”

MacKenzie: “Boy, this is really jammed.”

MacKenzie: “Um, if you really want to shoot something, maybe try that piston?” [if you shoot at him instead]

    MacKenzie: “Hang on-I got it.”

MacKenzie: “If I put my weight here, then it should…”

MacKenzie: “Ohh, I felt it move! Hang on.”

MacKenzie: “You know, shooting me isn’t going to get this open any faster.”

MacKenzie: “Missiles are effective against a creature with a hard shell, you know.”

MacKenzie: “Samus, there’s something interesting over there. Are you sure we don’t need to use that?” [he’s referring to a Save Station]

MacKenzie: “Is everything in this jungle tryin’ to kill us?!”

MacKenzie: “Wow, look up there. That is one massive tree. Must be thousands of years old.”

MacKenzie: “Can you read that? Does that say anything about this place? They really don’t want anyone in here. Must be a sacred space.” [referring to a lore stone]

MacKenzie: “Seriously. How’d you do that?”

MacKenzie: “That was a close one. I wasn’t sure we were gonna make it. Thank you, Samus. I can see the door, Samus! Let’s get out of here. Argh! Whooah! I’m good. I’m OK.”

MacKenzie: “I’ve never seen anything like this. It’s beautiful. [enemies arrive] Whoa! I’m just gonna stay out of your way. You let me know when it’s clear.”

MacKenzie: “Aw, look at ’em fly. Nice shot!”

    MacKenzie: “Moving up.”

MacKenzie: “They’re coming over the side.”

MacKenzie: “Hey! Don’t leave me behind!” [if you move too far ahead]

MacKenzie: “Try your Missiles, Samus. You might be able to knock them right off the bridge.”

MacKenzie: “Whoa, you sent that one flying!”

MacKenzie: “I got one. Wait. I got one?”

MacKenzie: “There’s a strange smell around here. Is it sweet or stinky?”

MacKenzie: “This is the last stretch. I’m going for it. Cover me.”

MacKenzie: “I’m down. I need help. [reviving him] Am I gonna make it? [revived] ”

<<ALERT>> Mackenzie down! Press [X] to enter the Psychic Visor and hold [ZL] to heal.”

MacKenzie: “Argh! Whooah! I’m good. I’m OK.”

MacKenzie: “I have no idea what we’re doing, but it feels like it’s working.”

MacKenzie: “Well I’ll be. It did work!” [solving a Psychic Mote puzzle]

MacKenzie: “You found something for your suit, didn’t you?” [after acquiring the Control Beam]

MacKenzie: “That door just opened all by itself!” [after using the Control Beam to open a door]

MacKenzie: “No way… A MK-99 mech? I’d recognize that frame anywhere! MK-99 mech, this is Samus Aran, bounty hunter. You know her. She’s… she’s famous. You look very familiar… BETSY?! What are you doing here? I worked on her back at base. I’ll take a few scans… Maybe we can come back here and get her.”

    Galactic Federation Heavyweight-Class Golem:
A bipedal, manned MK-99 war mech, primarily piloted
by Federation androids. Several critical components
    missing or damaged. Nonoperational.

MacKenzie: “Poor baby. She’s torn apart. If we could find the missing pieces… I bet we could get her up and running again. I poured my heart and soul into that mech… Poor Betsy…”

    MacKenzie: “Look at this place.”

MacKenzie: “This planet’s tech is a marvel.”

MacKenzie: “Dynamic reconfiguration of a suit. Fascinating!”

MacKenzie: “How about we avoid any standing water. Those things seem pretty territorial.”

MacKenzie: “Booyah! Long-range comms are back online.”

MacKenzie: “Man, they did not design these for humans. Oh, whoa! You are sneaky quiet, you know that?”

MacKenzie: “Hey, I’m glad you’re back. That data you gave me earlier is really coming in handy. I’ve been able to translate the Lamorn language. This planet, Viewros, doesn’t appear on any of the known star charts. Might as well be a ghost. I tried sending out a distress signal, but there is no activity in this sector.”

MacKenzie: “Now that our comms are working, we should be able to share data. I can provide you with intel from here. What do you say? Teammates?” [Samus nods] “Excellent. Hey, stay safe out there, Samus. I’ll be here if you need me.”

[he does] See, the button-pushing strategy always pays off. But I do not know what to do next… So, Samus? Would you give it a try?” [she touches the screen] “Did I fix it?”

MacKenzie: “Wait, you can interface with their tech… which means you can understand it… which means you’ve received translation data, which opens up a world of possibilities. Once I get this working, we can use this tech to our advantage. I just need remote access to your logs.” [Samus gestures for him to hand her a data chip]

MacKenzie: “Oh, this data chip… you think it’ll work? [Samus uses it on her Arm Cannon and hands it back] Wow, that is fascinating! Thank you. We’ll put this… here. Let’s see… [typing] This should do the trick. [power restored to door]”

MacKenzie: Alright! Look at that. We’ve got power! Well… one door is still locked, and the other one is malfunctioning. Ey, but it’s progress! OK… All of this is gonna take a while to figure out, so, I’m gonna stay here, if you wanna scout ahead? It’s about to get real nerdy in here… [in gameplay] It’ll take me a while to decode all this.”

MacKenzie: [after Samus fixes the door] “That’s one way to fix it. Good luck out there, Samus.”
