We are delighted to be highlighting Alex of Roar and Clank, a longtime Metroid fan whose Dark Samus cosplay broke the internet. She is only three years into her life of cosplay, but Alex has already won first place at Campzone 2018! Her cosplaying is sponsored by De Foamtastische Huiskamer, a prop store in Goirle, Netherlands. She focuses on armored characters and monstrous creatures, and she intends to do the Fusion Suit and Sylux in the future.
Roar and Clank
I am Alex, a 26 year old cosplayer from the Netherlands. You might better know me as Roar and Clank props who took the internet by storm with my Dark Samus cosplay from Metroid Prime 3 and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. I have been taking cosplaying serious for 3 years now, focusing myself on big Armor and Monster cosplay projects. I have since a year been participating in competitions, for which I always took a podium place. Together with my growing skills in my craft I have been motivated to push myself further and further.
I have always loved Metroid since I was a little girl. My first Metroid game was Metroid Fusion. When I finished the game as an 11 year old little girl and finding out Samus was woman like me? I was ecstatic! I was raised in a environment where girls had to be girly, I always wanted to be cool and wear armor, like Samus! With other words Samus Aran became my inspiration to do what I do now. I chose Dark Samus above any other of Samus’ armors because it hadn’t been done that often and I like to be unique, I am glad the world appreciates my take on the character! For the future I really want to revisit Metroid again. The Fusion Suit and Sylux are high on my cosplay list.
I am already a semi professional cosplayer, I am sponsored by a cosplay shop where I give EVA foam workshops on the regular. To be honest this is where I want to be regarding my ‘cosplay career’ I rather like cosplay to stay a hobby, instead of a full time job.
For my next projects I am planning on making the Xenomorph from the Alien series as well as a screen accurate cosplay of Wargreymon from Digimon. Trying to be unique really gives me the chance to search for exotic and hard projects, something I can really challenge myself with!

Metroid fans never cease to amaze me with their talent and creativity. Alex’s cosplay is absolutely stunning and I was excited to find out that we were going to make a Community Spotlight for it. Dark Samus as a cosplay has been done before, but never with this level of detail. It looks exactly like Dark Samus! The whole suit – the intricate veins and the grooves on the armor in particular – is breathtaking. I’m happy that it’s received a lot of attention online from Metroid and Smash Bros. fans alike. This costume was clearly a labor of love for the character and the series, and I can’t wait to see what Alex creates in the future.
