For the third year running, Shinesparkers readers have voted for their favorite Metroid game, with 618 votes cast for 14 Metroid games, from the original Metroid all the way to Metroid Dread. This is up from 388 votes last year. Without further ado, here are the results!
Please note – At the time of gathering votes for the poll, Metroid Prime 4: Beyond had not released, so it was not included in our poll. The Metroid Prime Trilogy and Metroid Prime Remastered were not included as separate games in this year’s vote.
14th – Metroid (Nintendo Famicom Disk System, 1986) – 1 vote (No change)
Metroid received one vote, placing 12th in our poll. It only got one vote the previous year as well.
12th – Metroid II: Return of Samus (Nintendo Game Boy, 1991) – 3 votes (No change)
12th – Metroid Prime Hunters (Nintendo DS, 2006) – 3 votes (No change)
For the third year in a row, Metroid II: Return of Samus and Metroid Prime Hunters are jointly tied, now at number 11 in our favorite Metroid game poll for 2024 with three votes, having no change compared to last year.
11th – Metroid: Other M (Nintendo Wii, 2010) – 4 votes (+3)
Metroid: Other M gained three votes from the previous year, placing 10th in the poll.
9th – Metroid Prime Pinball (Nintendo DS, 2005) – 5 votes (+5)
9th – Metroid Prime: Federation Force (Nintendo 3DS, 2016) – 5 votes (No change)
Metroid Prime Pinball gained five votes from the previous year, where it charted last with zero votes. Perhaps people have started to give this spin-off a chance. It comes in at a joint 9th place in this year’s poll with Metroid Prime: Federation Force, which took exactly the same number of votes since the previous year. Federation Force is one of only two games in the poll that gained no additional votes from 2023.
8th – Metroid: Samus Returns (Nintendo 3DS, 2017) – 6 votes (+2)
With six votes, Metroid: Samus Returns is 8th in the poll, having gained two additional votes from its total last year.
7th – Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Nintendo Wii, 2007) – 21 votes (+9)
With twenty one votes, Metroid Prime 3: Corruption is 7th in the poll, up nine votes this time around. Did you vote for it?
6th – Metroid Zero Mission (Nintendo Game Boy Advance, 2004) – 38 votes (+15)
Placing 6th is, once again, Metroid Zero Mission! This year it received 38 votes, gaining 15 from the poll in 2023. Zero Mission became available through the Expansion Pack tier of Nintendo Switch Online in July 2024, giving players who have that subscription the chance to play it, potentially for the first time.
5th – Metroid Fusion (Nintendo Game Boy Advance, 2002) – 63 votes (+22)
Metroid Fusion has remained the fifth favorite game for the third year in a row. It gained 22 votes. A new generation of games has been able to rediscover the fourth 2D Metroid title through Nintendo Switch Online, provided they subscribe to the Expansion Pack tier.
4th – Super Metroid (Super Nintendo, 1994) – 100 votes (+37)
This year, Super Metroid placed fourth with 63 votes, an increase of 37 from the previous year. It remains one of the most acclaimed Metroid titles, as it provided the formula for the games that followed.
3rd – Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (Nintendo GameCube, 2004) – 105 votes (+42)
This year, Metroid Prime 2: Echoes rose above Super Metroid, which it tied with in joint third place last year, and gained an increase in 42 votes. It seems there is much love for the sequel to Metroid Prime in the fandom.
2nd – Metroid Prime (Nintendo GameCube, 2002) – 130 votes (+60)
Metroid Prime places second, with 130 votes, gaining 60 from its total in 2023. It just barely missed the top result by 4 votes. The re-release of Prime as Metroid Prime Remastered has likely introduced it to a new generation of gamers who may not have been around for its original release.
1st – Metroid Dread (Nintendo Switch, 2021) – 134 votes (+35)
For the third year in a row, our top spot has gone to Metroid Dread, the newest title in the Metroid series! It received 134 votes, an increase from its total of 99 last year. Dread, which will celebrate the third anniversary of its release in October 2024, has continued to be popular with Metroid fans.
Once again, a huge thanks to everyone who voted in this year’s poll. As we always say: If your favorite Metroid game didn’t win, or if it didn’t receive the amount of votes you thought it might, please don’t be disheartened. This poll isn’t the final say on what is and isn’t the greatest Metroid title, and every single game made is a miracle, and each one should be celebrated.
