Shinesparkers Feature:

A Tribute to Timothy Patrick Miller

Back to Features List

On June 21st, 2025, Timothy Patrick Miller, the voice of Fleet Admiral Castor Dane in Metroid Prime 3: Corruption, left this world. It was only a year later that the Shinesparkers team discovered this. Members Darren, Roy and Irene gathered together to pay tribute to Timothy and his role as Admiral Dane.

One of the very first interviews I ever published for Shinesparkers was with Timothy Patrick Miller, and learning only recently of his passing, has filled me with great sadness. When I first approached him to request an interview back in September 2010, he was extremely responsive and supportive of the idea, and I was proud to include it on the Shinesparkers website. We continued to exchange emails in the years that followed, and he would wish me and the rest of the team happy holidays each year. He even sent me a personal message through the mail, which is something I have always treasured. I am thankful that he made the time to speak with a fan, it really meant a lot to me back then.

Timothy’s role as Admiral Dane is an iconic and memorable one, and a performance that will live on forever in the hearts of Metroid fans. My thoughts are with his loved ones. Rest in peace, Admiral!

A hand-written note Darren received from Timothy.

Roy

I remember reading Darren’s interview with Timothy Patrick Miller when it first came out many years ago. His performance as Admiral Dane left a lasting impression on me, as the first in person commander Samus worked with onscreen, even before (human) Adam Malkovich. The Admiral was a direct, yet fair commanding officer who remained steadfast during the Space Pirate attack on Norion and subsequent galactic crisis. He never wavered in his determination to win the war. As Dane, Timothy projected full confidence in Samus to end the carnage.

What I enjoyed most about his role as Admiral Dane was his iconic exclamation of “Damn!” This was changed to “No!” for the PAL release of Metroid Prime 3. In the interview with us, Timothy took that alteration in stride. Metroid fans the world over appreciated his role. Beyond Metroid, Timothy had an extensive career in spoken word literature, with his proudest project being American Listener’s Theatre, a series of audiobooks that tell stories from American history.

Admiral, it was an honor to fight the Space Pirates by your side. As the team likes to say, see you next mission.

Irene

Metroid Prime 3: Corruption was the third Metroid game I ever played, so Timothy Patrick Miller’s role as Fleet Admiral Castor Dane would therefore be among my earliest impressions of Metroid altogether!

What I remember best about his performance was how stern and serious Admiral Dane was. While I sadly didn’t get to hear him exclaim “damn”, Timothy delivered plenty of lines that succinctly demonstrated the urgency of their missions. Amidst all this, Admiral Castor Dane was still solution-oriented, and he cared about getting the job done.

Something that touched me was Timothy’s passion for art. It is said that he valued art for art’s sake. With how he described Admiral Dane to us as a character, down to how he enthusiastically talked about his peers and the workplace at Retro Studios, I really do feel he loved art to a high degree. He clearly had a burning passion for storytelling, as any performance with Timothy that I’ve listened to, I could feel the world growing around me. It all becomes much grander, and a lot more magical. It is clear that he wanted us to use our imagination more and to set our minds free, and I’ll try to keep that in mind for my future artistic endeavours.

Austin, Texas was a place quite dear to him. He was not born in Austin, however he wanted to move there as quickly as possible. Knowing this, I wanted to pay tribute to him by making a render based on the wonderful nature nearby Austin.

Are you able to spot where it is supposed to be? I was not sure if it was his favourite spot in Austin, but with respect to Timothy, I let my heart and imagination decide.

Some members of the Metroid community wanted to share their own tributes to Timothy, and we’ve selected a few to include in this feature:

Metroid Prime 3 is one of my favorite games of all time and my overall favorite Prime game. Mr. Miller played a truly memorable role, and I loved his delivery of every line back in 2007.
Metroid isn’t a series known for it’s voice acting, but Prime 3 changed that and I couldn’t be happier about it.
R.I.P Timothy Miller. Sending you a Samus Aran thumbs up.🫡👍🏽

Great writing and a great performance turned what could have been a stereotypical military officer into a unique and respected character. Admiral dane understood the player just as much as Samus. Addressing us with confidence and assuredness, making us truly feel like a part of this universe

Further tributes from our audience can be found on our social media posts on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and YouTube.

On behalf of the Shinesparkers team, our thoughts are with the loved ones of Timothy Patrick Miller. Admiral Dane remains popular with the Metroid community, in large part due to Timothy’s unforgettable performance. May he rest in peace.
